First Lieutenant Atherton served with the
376th Bomb Wing at Lockbourne Air Force
Base, Ohio.

He was killed when B-47E Stratojet #52-0402
crashed on takeoff, due to faulty gauges
that caused an unintentional loading imbalance
in the fuel tanks, putting more weight to the
rear. The aircraft faltered and a wing struck
the ground, and went out of control and
crashed and burned on the runway.

All three airmen aboard perished.

The other two officers were:

MAJ Thomas Arthur Henry and
Capt George W Berliner
