James Grafton Anding graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, with the Class of 1924. He was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant of Field Artillery. He made the Army his career and served during World War II and Korea, retiring on June 30, 1954 at the rank of Colonel after 30 years of service. His decorations include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster (second award), the Bronze Star Medal, and Combat Ribbon.

James married Jane Cheney Rehkoph, daughter of Colonel Edward Bernard Rehkopf, U. S. Army, and graduate of West Point, Class of 1902.
