Ray: Grace Brock Ray, member of probably the oldest pioneer family in southwestern New Mexico, passed away May 22 at her home in Lordsburg. Grace was born Jan. 21, 1911 to Julius Caesar Brock and Anna Schmelzel Brock. Her father had come to the Burro Mountains in 1876 and established his ranch on Thompson Canyon a few years later. Born on this ranch were three daughters Marie, Helen and Grace and a son Glen Brock who died in childhood. With no boys in the family the girls had to be the ranch hands and many old-timers remember how well Grace handled stock, and how well she could ride and rope. She was not just a country girl however, having completed three years of college. On April 25, 1935, Grace married Charles Ray and they started a ranch just a few miles from her old home. Together they made their ranch self-sufficient with some farming, a garden and many lovely fruit trees as well as their cattle. Grace Ray lived by the pioneer code of honesty, loyalty to friends, integrity and hospitality. Many remember her generosity with the fruit produced on her beloved ranch. Her many friends also admired very much her courage and hopefulness during the last several years. Grace is survived by her husband Charles; one daughter Kathleen Marley; one sister Marie McCauley; five grandchildren, Melinda Jackson, Laura Marley, Louanna Marley, Charles Marley and Sandra Marley; one great grandchild, Christi Jackson. Funeral services were held May 26 at 2 p.m. at Heather Funeral Home in Lordsburg with Fred Ewing of the Church of Christ officiating. Burial was at Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Art Bryan, Rex Kipp, William Kipp, Glenn Dorsett, Bill Johnson, and Charles Marley. Honorary pallbearers were George Stone, Pete Chase, James Wells, Fausto Noce, Joe Rutland, Bob Lowerey, Toby Wallace, Dr. Robert North, Gerald Fuller, Victor Lazar, Alvin Parker and a host of friends.
