Mathematician, professor of theoretical physics at Bristol University, and of theoretical science at Cambridge University. He is regarded as the initiator of modern computational chemistry. He was educated at Leigh Grammar School, Lancanshire, where he read classics, and at Manchester University, where he studied mathematics and took an honours degree and an M.Sc. During WWII he saw servive in france with the Royal Flying Corps.
