William Gwyn was a Sheriff for Pike County in Georgia, serving 10 years in Law Enforcement. He died in the line of duty at age 53. Sheriff Gwyn and several of his Deputies were attempting to arrest three men for Cattle Rustling. The suspects were a Father, his son, and the Fathers friend. As the Deputies surrounded the house, the three suspects opened fire on them. Sheriff Gwyn was shot and killed, several of his Deputies was wounded. The three suspects were all captured. The Father and son were convicted of First Degree Murder. The son was hanged on June 18th, 1897, 14 months later. His father was sentenced to Life in Prison. He died in Prison of a Heart Attack on November 18th, 1904, 7 years after the crime. The other Suspect was tried and acquitted. Sheriff Gwyn was survived by his wife, Dozier Rebecca Dwyn, and three children.
