BOUNTIFUL--Dr. Monte Burr McLaws, 61, of Bountiful, Utah died April 11, 1996.
Born November 20, 1934, Los Angeles, Calif.; to Franklin J. and Marian Pace McLaws. He grew up in Holbrook, Mesa and Tempe, Ariz. He graduated from Arizona State University with BA and M.A. degrees, he earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of Missouri in 1970. He filled a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1955-57 in the Uruguay-Paraguay Mission serving his last six month in Peru.
He married Emily Church in the Arizona Temple in 1962. He taught high school in Pima, Ariz. in 1963. He was a professor of History at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska from 1968-76. From 976-1993 he worked for the Genealogical Society of the LDS Church serving as a Records Specialists in Field Operations in India, Sri Lanka, Africa and the Middle East. Monte often lectured at BYU SL and at Education Week on personal and family history. He authored the book "Spokesman for the Kingdom" and numerous articles on historical subjects. He was an expert and advocate of oral history.
Monte and Emily have six children. Monte is survived by his wife, Emily, of Bountiful, Utah; and five children: Bradley (Christine), Plano, Texas; Brian (Lisa), of Elksville, Maryland; Brent (Darla), of Provo, Utah; Maria (Tim) Hodgson, of Centerville, Utah; and Melanie McLaws, of Bountiful, Utah; four grandchildren; father, Franklin J. McLaw, and brothers, Jon, Larry, Frank, Otis, and David, all of Mesa, Ariz.; and five sisters, Lyndella, Caroline, Kathy, Gail and Maylene of Ariz. and Utah.
Funeral services will be held April 16, 1996 at 11 a.m. at the Bountiful 53rd Ward, 650 East 1400 North, Bountiful, Ut. Friends may call at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, on Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. and one hour prior to services. Interment at Centerville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions the Alzheimer's Association of Utah.
