In the spring of 1887 he went with his brother-in-law Eddy Holmes, to Colorado, again locating on a homestead 80 miles south of Sterling, returning to Fairbury in the fall to continue teaching. After teaching several terms in
this locality he went to Holt county teaching several terms there.
In 1894 he moved to Arkansas, locating near Stuttgart where he again continued teaching.
In 1896 he was united in marriage to Miss Maude Wells and settled in Ashland, NE. The following spring they moved to Iowa, locating near Maxwell where he still continued teaching. He returned to Custer County for a short time and in the spring of 1901, he moved with his wife and two small sons back to Maxwell, Iowa, where he worked on the railroad.
In 1902 he came back to the old homestead in Gates. There he farmed and took contant care of his aged parents until their deaths. In 1930 he left the homestead and located in Lincoln, NE, where he resided until the fall of 1936 when he moved to Portland, Oregon where he lived until his death.
"Jesse" as he was commonly called was a public spirited citizen, and looked upon as an esteemed leader in all activities for the betterment of any community that was his home.
