Elizabeth Conaway was born about 1786 in Maryland (see below). Her parents were William and Nancy (Amos) Conaway. The family moved from Maryland to Bourbon County, Kentucky about 1794.

Betsey Conaway married Joseph Neal on April 7, 1807 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. They remained in Bourbon County, Kentucky for the 1810, 1820, and 1830 US censuses. In the 1820 census, the Joseph Neal family was between Thos. Neal and James Neal. Elizabeth's father William Conaway was on the other side of James Neal, and Elizabeth's brother Amos Conaway was two houses down from William. The children in the 1830 US census were: two males and one female under age 5, two males and one female age 5 to 9, one male and one female age 10 to 14, and two males and one female age 15 to 19.

In the late 1820s and early 1830s, Elizabeth's parents and at least six of her married siblings moved to McLean County, Illinois.

The basic story of Joseph and Elizabeth was described in a biographical sketch of their son Joseph, Jr. in a book about the history of McLean County, Illinois. In the excerpt below, Joseph, Sr. was called John.

"[Joseph, Jr.] was a son of John and Elizabeth (Conaway) Neal, natives of the Blue Grass State. In 1832, John Neal journeyed to McLean County, Ill., and purchased a large tract of land in what was then known as Empire Township. Returning in 1833, in order to remove his family to the place he had provided for them, he was seized with sickness and died a few days after reaching the old home. Soon afterward the mother, accompanied by her family, made the journey to the new purchase, and took possession of the farm, the elder [sons] cultivating the land."
(Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of McLean County, Volume II. 1908, Edited by Ezra M. Prince and John H. Burnham. Pages 1215-1216.)

Elizabeth probably had significant help from her extended family in McLean County. At the time of the 1840 US census, Elizabeth Neal was head of a household in McLean County. Some of her children were with her. Her son Amos Neal and his family were next door. Elizabeth's brother Aquilla Conaway and his family were on the other side of Amos.

Elizabeth was also in McLean County next to son Amos and his family at the time of the 1850 US census. Living with her were: Sally Neal age 26, Thomas Neal age 24, Elizabeth Neal age 22, and Joseph Neal age 21, all born in Kentucky. Son Amos was in DeWitt County, Illinois at the time of the 1860 US census. Elizabeth has not been found in the 1860 US census.

At the time of the 1870 US census, Elizabeth Neal age 84 was living with her son Joseph and his family at Farmer City in DeWitt County, Illinois. Her census record was marked as being able to read, but not able to write. Son Amos and family were also in Farmer City, Illinois at that time.

The gravestone photo has "Died September 3, 1872. Aged 86 Yeays." The number of months and days for her age are not given. This would make her birth between September, 1785 and August, 1786. The 1850 US census has her estimated birth year as 1788 and the 1870 US census has 1786. The 1850 US census has her birth in Maryland and the 1880 US census records for her sons Joseph and Amos both have their mother's place of birth as Maryland. As noted above, the family was in Maryland until about 1794.
