He was serving with the Brigade Reconnaissance Force deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Sgt Fox was killed by an improvised explosive device near Check Point Shamal Storrei, west of Lashkar Gah in the Nad-e-Ali district of Helmand province. He was on a foot patrol during Operation Moshtarak.
Aged 34, from St Ives, Cornwall. Sgt Fox joined the army in 1994 and was trained as a combat engineer and Welder Royal Engineer Class 1. He moved steadily through the ranks and was posted to the regiment's 45 Field Squadron in 2006. Selected to join the reconnaissance troop, he finished the course at the top of the class was promoted to Troop Sergeant in 2008. He trained and served postings in Canada, South Africa, Northern Ireland and Kosovo and on the front line in Iraq. He deployed to Afghanistan in October 2009. Colleagues will remember him for his quick wit and as a dedicated soldier who inspired others. He was a devoted family man and also enjoyed playing football.
Sgt Fox is survived by his wife Charlotte, their children Ruby, Archie and Jack, parents Maurice and Alex, other family and friends. The family said, "Paul was a legend not only to his loving wife, children and family but also to anyone who ever knew him. Paul was a proud soldier who will be deeply missed."
Funeral with full military honours was held at the Parish Church of St Ia in St Ives on
March 31, 2010 with burial in Towednack.
In September 2010, Sgt Fox was posthumously awarded a Mention in Despatches in recognition of gallant service.
