Mr. Abney was helping a negro make repairs to the elevator which was suspended at the second floor when a cable supporting one corner of the care came unfastened and allowed that corner to sag, precipitating Mr. Abney through the shaft onto the floor.
In the fall Mr. Abney's neck was broken, his skull crushed and his shoulder shattered. He did not gain consciousness after the fall, and death occurred a few minutes after the accident.
Mr. Abney removed here from Laurel several weeks ago to open a furniture store. He had formerly resided in this city for one year, but for the last several years had lived elsewhere.
He is survived by his wife was formerly Miss Florence Brown of this city; four brothers, Sam and Bob Abney of Heidelberg; John Abney of Pachuta; and Dr. Walter Abney of Lake Arthur, LA; and three sisters, Mrs. George Partin of Montclair, TN; Mrs M. V. Hickman of Heidelberg, and Mrs Enoch Travis of Laurel; all of whom were here for the funeral with the exception of Mrs Hickman who was ill and Mrs Partin.
The funeral service will be conducted from the home of Mrs. Abney's neice, Mrs W. M. Breland on Cherry Street this afternoon at four o'clock by Rev. J. T. Leggett, pastor of Main Street Methodist Church of Hattiesburg and Rev. O. N. Lewis, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Laurel.
