SKELLYTOWN - An ice-slick roadway contributed to a fatal accident which claimed the lives of two Borger residents and injured a Dumas man. The accident occurred about 6:45 p.m. Saturday about 1/2 mile west of here on Texas Highway 152.
Killed in the mishap were Clemit "Clint" E. Matheny, 36, of 417 Deleware [sic], Borger, and Mrs. Louise Holland, about 40, of 66 Courts in Borger.
They were pronounced dead at the scene by Carson County Justice of the Peace W.G. "Dutch" Grant, who acted as coroner.
A solid sheet of ice on the roadway was the major factor in the mishap.
The Dumas man, Gary Scott Jones, of 1322 Binkley, was reportedly westbound on the roadway, when Mathey's car apparently slid on the icy road in front of the oncoming Dumas man's car.
Jones' vehicle struck the Matheny car on the driver's side.
A third car, driven by Georgia Massengale, of Central City, Colo., struck the fatality car, however she escaped injury.
Traffic was re-routed through Skellytown. Personnel of the Texas Highway Department and the Carson Bounty sheriff's department assisted in re-routing hundreds of vehicles.
Ambulance and other emergency personnel managed to take th bodies of the fatalities from the car within about an hour after it occurred.
The Dumas man was rushed by Borger Ambulance Service to Highland General Hospital in Pampa, where he was reported in fair condition. The Dumas man reportedly suffered head and arm injuries.
Following the mishap, the Dumas man walked about half a mile to the home of Neal McBroom, 115 Conley Dr., Skellytown, to call for an ambulance and notify the police.
Funeral service for both are pending with Minton Mortuary in Borger.
Investigation the mishap were Troopers Tom Wicker and Barry McNutt of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
