Mid was born in Akron, Summit County, Ohio, the daughter of Isaac and Adella Hoffman Taylor and the third child in a family of four girls. She had a high school education. Her father, Isaac Taylor, was a sign painter, an artist, an oil-producer, and was one-time mayor of Bowling Green. He was the son of New York Quaker parents, Caleb and Anna Fell Taylor. Mary Adella Hoffman Taylor, was the daughter of Elijah H. and Elizabeth Pearsall Hoffman of Pennsylvania and an accomplished pianist. Mid was married on Christmas Day 1905 in Bowling Green, Ohio, to Henry McKnight, who was the love of her life. Like her mother, she was an accomplished pianist, and would play for the family, especially at Christmas, dueting on the piano with her daughter, Mary. Mid was always cheerful and never had a bad word to say about anyone. She mourned Henry for 30 years after his death, and never remarried although she had plenty of opportunities.
