Arthur Caldwell was my grandfather. Just as a grandfather should be he was loving and kind. He was born in Yellow Pine Lousiana to Laura Spencer Caldwell and Otis Caldwell in 1908. His father, Otis Caldwell was killed in a saw mill accident in 1909. Arthur then moved to Nachodoches Texas with his mother and sister Grace, living with his grandparents until his mother wed Jessie Leftwich and moved to Burke Texas in 1913. In 1918 or 1919 Arthur's mother passed away. We believe it might have been related to the Spanish Flu or TB. Arthur and Gracie was were sent to Lousiana to live their father's mother and father. It was a hard life in Lousiana for my grandfather. Arthur's grandfather, Samuel Amos Caldwell, had children the same age of his own. Arthur worked in the field while Gracie worked in the house and the other children got to attend school. He is listed living with his grandfather and his sisterin Webster Parish the 1920 Census. Around the age of 15 he ran away, back to Diboll, Tx to be near his half brother Thad Leftwich all his aunts and uncles on his mother's side of the family. He worked as a farmer, a carpenter, and in the saw mill. In 1937 He married Myrtle Clyde Elizabeth Caldwell in Houston Texas. A year and two months later he had a son, my daddy, Clifford James Caldwell in Houston Texas. Arthur worked at the University Oaks Lumber Company. In 1945 and 1946, when WWII ended, my grandfather went to Hawaii to help rebuild Pearl Harbor as the president of the United States requested help from all citizens with construction experience. I have the hand saw that traveled with him to and from. Arthur was the father of three sons, Clifford, George and Dwight Leon Caldwell. After returning from Hawaii Arthur started working for Union Pacific and Railroad as a switchman and remained so until his retirement in 1969. In 1967 his wife, Myrtle, passed away and he moved in with his son Clifford. Arthur loved his retirement. He loved to go juking and he loved the ladies (especially "big boobie women". Arthur lived in Conroe, Houston and Waco during his later years. He was married three more times before moving in his with son in Grangerland Texas in 1988. He lived there until about 15 days before his death where he said he want to live with his younger son who was living in the Porter Nursing Home in Porter Texas. Arthur passed peacefully in his sleep, during the early hours of February 19, 1999. He lies in heavenly peace beside his wife, Myrtle Clyde Elizabeth Pierce, son Dwight Leon Caldwell, son Clifford James Caldwell and wife Virginia Brookshire Caldwell, in Ryan Chapel Cemetery, Diboll. Texas.
