Son of Alfred Haines; twin brother of W. W. Haines
Burial arrangements by Mrs. Stephens

Evening Roseburg Review, Tuesday, December 19, 1916:
The funeral of J.A. Haines, a Benton County Pioneer of 1851, was held in Eugene Township Thursday afternoon immediately following the arrival of the funeral party in that city from Monmouth, where Mr. Haines died Tuesday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.A. Portwood, says the Corvallis Gazette. Mr. Haines was born in Tazewell County, Illinois, August 8, 1828, and crossed the plains to Oregon in 1851, settling first at Corvallis. He moved to Scottsburg and later took up land in Curry County, where he operated a stock farm of 800 acres located at the head of the Sixes River. In 1853 he married Miss Eleanor Chaffie, who died a number of years ago. Mr. Haines was a twin brother of W.W. Haines, the Eugene tanner, who is now 88 years of age. Besides his brother, Mr. Haines is survived by 11 children, one of whom resides in South America. Contributor: Carolyn Schwab (46985190) •
