Eldon Denzil Brinley, a man of great athletic and musical ability, and great energy, died peacefully in Salt Lake Dec 6, 2003, 23 days before his 94th birthday, of causes incident to age.

He was born in Midvale, Utah, December 29, 1909 to Joseph Arthur Brinley and Ethel May Driggs. He attended high school in Pleasant Grove where he graduated as Valedictorian.

Eldon attended BYU, graduating as Salutatorian, with a BA in music and business. An outstanding athlete, he earned 11 letters at BYU in basketball, tennis, track, and football. He was an All-American in basketball; and State and Intermountain doubles tennis champion. He played in the BYU Band and organized a dance band which played for many dances. Eldon continued his education, earning a Masters Degree from USC and a EDD (PhD) from NYU, where he also served as Director of Recreation.

After graduating from BYU, he became head coach in Ammon High School and then at Soda Springs High School in Idaho. The President of Snow College, recognizing his teaching and athletic ability, hired him.

His teams at Snow had great success in football, basketball, tennis, and track. His basketball team won the Junior College Championship in 1940 and again in 1941.

During World War II, Eldon served in the U. S. Navy. He saw action in Guam, the Philippines, and later in Japan. After the War, he served in the Naval Reserve, becoming Commanding Officer of the Reserve Unit at the Kingsville Naval Air Station, Texas. He retired from the Navy with 20 years of service.

After returning from the War, Eldon became Chairman of the Department of Health & Physical Education at Texas A&M in Kingsville, Texas. He also served as Interscholastic League Director for area high schools in Texas for 25 years. He served as President of the USO; the Red Cross; President of State of Texas Cancer Society, the American Lung Association, and Texas College Professors' Association. He has written numerous articles published in National journals and publications. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, camping and family history work.

In 1933 he married Lillie Holm in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the parents of three children. In 1955 he married Mary Alice Sumrow. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Mesa Arizona Temple. They are the parents of four children. He has been active in the LDS Church all his life. He served in many ward and stake callings, including presiding over two separate branches 30 miles apart, at the same time, one in Kingsville, Texas and the other in Alice, Texas (Spanish speaking), counselor in two different stake presidencies; Director of the Corpus Christi and Austin, Texas Branch Genealogy Libraries. With his wife, Mary Alice, he served as a Family History Missionary for more than 16 years.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; a infant daughter, La Nea Darle Brinley; three brothers and a sister. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Alice; his six children: Dawna Meline (Harold) Jones; Douglas Eldon (Geri) Brinley; Denzil Rhea (Chrissa) Brinley; Derry Lynn (Carol) Brinley; Lori Brinley (Bill) McNabb; and LeNae (Chris) Boyett; 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. in the Ensign Stake Center, 135 "A" Street (2nd Ave. & A St.), Salt Lake, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Interment in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Funeral directors - Olpin Family Mortuary, Pleasant Grove.

The family gives heartfelt thanks to the Sunrise Brighton Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the LDS Humanitarian Services or the Church Missionary Fund.

Note: During Eldon's time at Texas A&M, it was actually named Texas A&I University. It became Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 1993, about 15 years after granddad retired from the university.
