John and Elizabeth sailed to America on the "S. Curling" with their four youngest children and arrived in Boston in the spring of 1856. The family traveled by train to Iowa then joined the Edward Bunker 3rd Handcart Company made up almost entirely of Welshmen which departed Iowa City on June 23, 1856 and arrived in Salt Lake City on October 2, 1856. The 1,300 mile journey took 100 days and they walked the entire way. See "Handcarts to Zion" by Leroy R. Hafen and Ann W. Hafen. They eventually settled in Cedar City the home of their eldest daughter Mary who came to America with her fiancee Elias Morris in 1852.
