Carol Nielson Orgill, wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away from complications due to Alzheimer's and stroke on 23 January. Carol was born on February 15, 1933, in Ephraim, Utah, to Glen E. Nielson and Florence Eudora Madsen, the second of seven children. Her early life was spent in Ephraim; McGill, Nevada; and Salt Lake City. She attended high school and college at Snow College and graduated second in the class from Snow College. After college, she attended the University of Utah, graduating in 1956 with a B.A. degree in Home Economics and German.
While at the University of Utah, she met Montie Orgill from Caliente, Nevada, whom she married in August 1956 in the Manti Temple. During her early married life, Carol taught German and Home Economics in Salt Lake City and Ft. Collins, Colorado, high schools. She also taught in her various LDS Wards and was highly regarded as a knowledgeable teacher. Even after being afflicted with Alzheimer's, she was able to recall much of the scriptural and church history information she had taught in previous years.
Carol and her family lived in various locales including Salt Lake City; Honolulu and Kaneohe, Hawaii; Ft. Collins, Colorado; Richland, Washington; Las Cruces, New Mexico; and Cedar City, Utah. No matter where she lived, she easily made friends and was a good neighbor. Carol was also an excellent seamstress and cook. In high school, she won several awards for her sewing, including a 4-H trip to Washington, D.C. Her five daughters became very spoiled with her ability to look at a dress and make up a pattern for it. Carol was very active in her LDS wards, where she held many callings and helped a lot with humanitarian service projects. She also spent some time as a temple ordinance worker in the St. George Temple.
Carol is preceded in death by her daughter, Melanie, her brother, David, and her parents. She is survived by her husband Montie; daughters Loretta (Salt Lake City), Alyssa (Gresham, Oregon), Regina (Richland, Washington), and Karina (Brian) Hoff (Mesa, Arizona); brothers Gerald (Leila) Nielson (Salt Lake City) and Jay (Marie) Nielson (Anthem, Arizona); and sister Lorraine (Dale) Ross (St. George). She has 10 grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, January 29, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the Cedar City 8th and 2nd Ward building, 200 West 200 South, Cedar City. Viewings will be held at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, January 28, and at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 29, at the Cedar City 8th and 2nd Ward building. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
