Former Times reporter, Journal editor dead at 74

From Staff Reports

Veteran newsman Perry Roy Keith was remembered Tuesday as a compassionate friend and respected co-worker.

Keith, 74, died Tuesday in a local hospital.

In 1950, he started his 27-year career in newspapers at the Shreveport Times, where he reported on police, fire, court, health and the economy. In 1953, he moved to the competing Shreveport Journal, where he was a reporter, editorial writer and editor until 1977.

Dorothy Dodson worked with Keith for more than 20 years and continued contact with him throughout the years.

Dodson remembered how Keith one day went out of his way to help her check on her grown daughter, who was not answering her telephone.

"I was just scared to death. I was afraid something happened to her. Somebody called Perry and he met me at her apartment and broke the door down to see if she was murdered. Not everybody would have done that on a Saturday morning," Dodson said, adding that her daughter had spent the night with a friend and was fine.

"Perry was a fine reporter and a good editor. His reporters had a lot of respect for him," she said.

Former Shreveport Journal city editor Henry Delahunt worked with Keith about two years. He called Keith "a wonderful person and a hell of a good newspaperman."

"He was just a good, hard working steady newsman. He did his job well and he knew the town well. Everybody who knew him liked him," Delahunt said.

Patricia Shelton, former reporter at the Journal, said Keith was a loyal family man as well. His survivors are his wife of 44 years, Dorothy, son Christopher Hunt Keith and daughters Susan Elizabeth Keith and Cynthia Jane Keith.

"He was very serious about his job, but Perry knew what was important. He was completely devoted to his wife and his children. They were above all the most important things to him," Shelton said.

After leaving the newspaper business, Keith worked in public relations at Physicians and Surgeons Hospital until retiring in 1987.

He will be buried Thursday morning at Forest Park Cemetery.
