Eldest of eight children born to Dimas R. and Virginia Gonzalez. Came to the United States with her parents in 1913 and settled in Elida, Roosevelt County, New Mexico. Dimas Gonzalez was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad.

As the only one of the children not born in the U.S., it was important to Nic to become a naturalized citizen. Once that was accomplished she carried her naturalization papers with her whenever she traveled outside the community.

She never married, but had a rich family life among her siblings and their families, and she had many life-long friends in the Elida area. She held a number of different jobs, but the one she held the longest was as a telephone operator for the community exchange.
