Col Marcus P. Bestow
Col Marcus P. Bestow died at the residence of his father in Coolville, Ohio on Thursday last in the fifty first year of his age. He had been visiting his father for about six weeks and his death was sudden and unexpected. Col. Bestow was born in Coolville in 1835 and was a rising practitioner at the Ohio Bar when the War of the Rebellion broke out. He forsook his practice and volunteered in an Ohio regiment serving with credit throughout the war. In December 1862, he was promoted to the rank of Captain and in June 1865 to that of Major. At the battle of Lookout Mountain he was in the advance line and for his bravery in this engagement he was made Brevet Colonel. In 1866 he was mustered out of the service and returned to practice of his profession in Ohio. Four years later he removed to Brooklyn where he had since lived was admitted to the New York Bar and had built up at the time of his death a large and lucrative practice in this city and Brooklyn. Last fall his wife was stricken with apoplexy and died. This was a great blow to Col. Bestow who seemed unable to recover from the shock. He was very popular in Brooklyn where he had hosts of friends who now mourn his sudden death. He was a member of the Lincoln Club and the New England Society of that city and was very active in promoting the interests and work of both organizations. He was a stanch Republican and a member of the Twenty-first Ward Republican Association of Brooklyn. Col Bestow leaves a daughter 13 years of age. The remains were to taken to Brooklyn for interment at Greenwood beside those of Mrs. Bestow. New York Times page 5 July 14, 1885
