WILLIAM HORTON AUSTIN, 86, of Hatteras, NC, died Saturday, May 7, at his residence. Mr. Austin, a native of Hatteras, NC, was a retired plumber and also worked for Twiford's Funeral Home for many years. He was a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church, Eureka Masonic Lodge 317, Elizabeth City, NC, Sudan Shrine Temple, the Scottish Rite and was on the board of directors of the Water Plant. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Mr. Austin was the son of William Wheeler Austin and Mogieannah Oden Austin; widower of Violet Gaskill Austin. Mr. Austin is survived by one daughter, Patricia A. Burrus of Raleigh; two sons: William H. "Billy" Austin, Jr. of Roxboro and Grady S. Austin of Hatteras; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A church service May 10 in the Hatteras United Methodist Church by the Revs. Jim Huskins and Jerry Jackson. Burial followed in the Oden Cemetery, Hatteras.
