Leo C. Gerken, 95, of rural West Point died Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at his
farm home.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, at
St. Charles, with Reverend Gerald Gonderinger as celebrant. Burial will be in
the Church Cemetery.
Leo was born April 23, 1914 on the family farm in Cuming County to Charles and
Margaret Stratman Gerken. He attended school at St. Anthony's Catholic School.
During the depresson years, Leo did migrant labor in Wyoming. On October 9,
1940 Leo married Genevieve "Genie" Goeken at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West
Point. Leo farmed and fed cattle in the St. Charles area, still doing field work
until last year.
Leo was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and Holy Name Society. He
enjoyed traveling all over the United States. He liked playing cards especially
Sheephead. Leo loved the farm and was partial to John Deere tractors.
Survivors include his wife Genie, of West Point, children Dorothy (Joe) Citta of
Reno, NV, Mary Jean (Tom) Rinker of Boylston, MA, Mildred (Leo) Mausbach of
Mesa, AZ, Robert of Wakefield, Eileen Wilson of Fremont, Michael of West Point,
Steven (Marlene) of Beemer, and Diane (Dudley)Persson of Oakland, sisters; Marie
Gerken and Clara Wiesen both of West Point and Ann Ernesti of Howells, 27
grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by sons
Richard in 1978 and Donald in 1985, sisters Pauline Gerken and Charlotte
Throener, brother Herbert and 2 infant great-granddaughters.
