Mrs. A.Y. Bell, who came to Collingsworth County 75 years ago as a bride, died in Thomas Nursing Center at 5:55 a.m. Saturday, June 9.

She was 98 years of age. Mrs. Bell was a member of a family which was instrumental in the growth of North Texas. Her maternal grandfather, Pleasant Thorpe, settled in Hood County in 1853 and founded the town of Thorpe Springs which became a major trading point. He was a founder of Ad-Rand College, which later moved to Ft. Worth to become Texas Christian University. Mrs. Bell was the former Amanda Jane Carraway, daughter of L.J. Carraway, a Confederate veteran, lawyer, farmer and merchant, and of Catherine Ann Thorpe Carraway. She was born in Parker County Oct. 30, 1885 in Parker County and grew up at Thorpe Springs. She attended Ad-Ran College and on June 1, 1909 was married to Andy Y. Bell in Weatherford.

They boarded a train for Memphis, then came to Collingsworth County, settling at Marella, on land which remains in the family. Mr. Bell was to become a rancher, banker and civic leader. Mrs. Bell was a talented pianist. In 1912, Mr. and Mrs. Bell moved to a farm west of Wellington and later to their home on Childress Street where they lived many years. They also lived for a time at their farm north of Wellington. Mrs. Bell was an active community Church and school leader and helped with Red Cross work during two world wars. She was a member of 1st Christian Church and played the piano for services many years. At the age of 95 she joined the United Daughters of the Confederacy, becoming a "Real Daughter". In the organization this indicates she was the daughter of a Confederate soldier during the Civil War.

Surviving Mrs. Bell are one daughter, Mrs. Newton (Faye) Crain of Canyon; three grandchildren: Jim Copeland of Anton, Charlotte Slay of Austin and Dorothy Frost of White Deer; and 8 grandchildren:
Charles, Cherie and Christy Frost of White Deer; Joel Slay of Canyon; Caroly Slay of Austin, Kurt Copeland, Kalette Copeland and Andy Jack Copeland of Anton. Relatives living here are two nephews, Paul Bell and Guy Bell; and a niece, Vaudine Pate lives at Lubbock.

Mr. Bell died in 1966 and their older daughter, Dorothy Bell Copeland Walker in 1981.
