Her maternal grandfather, Pleasant Thorpe, settled in Hood County in 1853 and founded the town of Thorpe Springs which became a major trading point. He was a founder of Ad-Rand College, which later moved to Ft. Worth to become Texas Christian University. Mrs. Bell was the former Amanda Jane Carraway, daughter of L.J. Carraway, a Confederate veteran, lawyer, farmer and merchant, and of Catherine Ann Thorpe Carraway. She was born in Parker County Oct. 30, 1885 in Parker County and grew up at Thorpe Springs.
