36 year old William enlisted in Lake City Florida on 21 Feb 1863 in 9th Inf Reg Co E, leaving his pregnant wife Cassandra and sons William 3 and Charlie 2. The family was living on a small homestead in New River County (redistricted as Bradford County in 1861). His son Joseph Stuart would be born 27 Aug 1863. William would not lay eyes on his third child until after the close of the war.
The records detailing William's service are faded and not readable. However we can confirm his enlistment date and that he was discharged at Appomattox Courthouse Virginia on 9 April 1865. William was injured during the war when a musket ball hit him in the leg. Despite the crippling injury William walked back to Florida from Virginia at the close of the war. His injury plagued him the entire of his life. He died in 1901 not having applied for a pension.
