Obituary from The Montana Standard 2/25/2010:

Richard Jacob Daum, 76, died on Monday morning, Feb. 22, 2010, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family, following complications from myelofibrosis, a rare disorder affecting the marrow of the bones. Richard was born on the family ranch in Edgar, on Dec. 30, 1933, the son of Jake and Emma (Steffan) Daum.

Richard was no stranger to doing an honest day's work for an honest day's pay. The truth be told, he always did more work than he got paid for, always pulling his weight and giving his all. His early life was spent working from dawn to dusk on the family ranch. After graduation from Joliet High School, he went to work in the oil fields and at the smelter in East Helena with his friend, of country music fame, Charlie Pride. Richard also worked for NP Transport as a truck driver and Sutey Oil, where he delivered fuel to local Thriftway stations for more than 40 years.

Richard was a Montana State Golden Gloves boxing champion. He enjoyed playing handball at the old Butte Y.M.C.A., where he met many acquaintances and made many friends. A member of the Knights of Columbus Athletic Club, he enjoyed going to the K of C Hall for a beer and a sauna. He was also a longtime member of the Elk's Lodge. For the most part, Richard did not have many hobbies. He worked to live and lived to work until his favorite hobby came along — his grandchildren. "Popeye," as he was known to them, loved to go to sporting events to see his grandson, "Bud", or to see his granddaughter, "Taylor D.", dance and cheerlead.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his brother, Ted Daum; his stepson, Wayne Thomson; his brother-in-law, Clinton Fredrick; and his sisters-in-law, Velma Daum and Audrey Bridges.

He is survived by his loving wife, Arlene, whom he married on May 23, 1963; sons and daughters-in-law, Rich and Julie Daum of Butte, Rod and Maria Daum of Dallas, Texas, Dan Daum of Bozeman, and Gary Daum of Los Gatos, Calif.; grandchildren, Taylor "Taylor D." Daum, Dalton "Bud" Daum, Nik Daum, and Megan Daum; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Irma Daum of Pryor, Ron and Marylyn Daum of Lavina, Gene Daum of Grass Range, and Jack and Jan Daum of Kamiah, Idaho; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Mona Brookeland of Coleman, Texas, and Donna and Bud Rabern of Winnett. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Terry and Norma Meyers of Glendive, Glenn and Nora Fredrick of Anchorage, Alaska, Webster Bridges of Helena and Bernie Fredrick of Helena; his stepson and spouse, John and Cathy Thomson of Pengilly, Minn.; stepgrandchildren, Chris and Cindy Thomson and April (Thomson) and Mike Bouchie; numerous nephews, nieces and cherished friends, most especially, his trucking buddies.

Friends are asked to join the family between 5 and 7 p.m. Friday in the Duggan Dolan Mortuary Chapel. Funeral Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Entombment of ashes will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Knights of Columbus Athletic Club, P.O. Box 196, Butte, 59703.
