His death occurred at 5:30 in the morning from acute kidney trouble. He had been suffering from this ailment for the past two years, but prior to his death appeared to have been in better than his usual condition, and his sudden passing comes quite as a shock to his family and friends. He had been attending to business as usual, and in fact on the day before his death, which was Monday, had made a trip to Fort Myers and returned.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Rivier at the house of the deceased in Bonita at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning. Interment was in the Fort Myers cemetery, the burial service being conducted by the Knights of Pythias.
Mr. Sumner was the son-in-law of Judge George W. Storter of Everglades, and was himself County Judge of Lee county for a number of years, as well as being mayor of Fort Myers for one term, also serving six years as Superintendent of public instruction in Lee county. At the time of his death he was a member of both the Lee County school board and thd city council of Bonita Springs.
He is survived by his wife and one son, Vernon, two brothers, J. C. Sumner of Fort Myers and W. C. Sumner of Detroit; and two sisters, Mrs. J. L. Lockhart of Lakeland and Mrs. W. D. Tankersley of Jacksonville.
