John Mount was accused of participating significantly in the Mountain Meadow Massacre of 7 Sept 1857. It is said that he gave the order, to "do you duty," which started the attack. John Doyle Lee bore the brunt of the accusations; he and John Mount continued to accuse the other. John Doyle Lee wrote two histories of the event. John Doyle was executed 20 years after the fact for the crimes.

John Mount was not excommunicated nor was he brought to trial. Evidently he had more patience than the law. He lived 10 years in exile away from home.
