Sylvia Carrie Bersaw, 82, died unexpectedly Tuesday evening, Feb. 23, 2010, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born on the Johnson Farm on Sept. 21, 1927 (the year of the big flood), the daughter of Willard Holton and Hazel Regina (Cutting) Johnson.

Mrs. Bersaw grew up in Clarendon where she attended local schools, graduating from Rutland High School in 1946 and attended every class reunion since.

On June 13, 1946, she married Richard Charles Bersaw Sr. who predeceased her on December 20, 1989.

Mrs. Bersaw had been employed at the Economy Department Store from 1945–1946 and the Bersaw Family Farm in Shrewsbury with her husband from 1957–1963. Together, they opened and operated Dick and Syl's Snack Bar and Dance Hall in East Wallingford from 1967–1971. Richard and Sylvia started a used furniture business from their garage in 1983. Sylvia continued to operate the business after the death of her husband with the assistance of her family until her retirement in 2003.

She enjoyed snowmobiling with her family and was an active member of the Shrewsbury Sno-Birds and the Poultney Snow Devils. Her other enjoyments besides her family and friends were bingo, casino gambling and her extensive Mickey Mouse paraphernalia collection.

Survivors include two daughters, Joanne Severance of Clarendon and Janet Jackson of Raleigh, N.C.; four sons, Richard C. Bersaw Jr. and Charles Bersaw, both of Clarendon, Donald Bersaw and Kevin Bersaw, both of Rutland; two sisters, Lila Pitts of Rutland and Eileen Kynoski of Proctor; three grandchildren, Thomas Severance of Fair Haven, Heather Penny of Clayton, N.C., and Matthew Bersaw of Rutland; three great-grandsons, Isaiah VanZandt, Thomas Severance Jr. and Marc Severance, all of Fair Haven; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Wallingford Aldous Funeral Home. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Burial will be at a later date in the St. Patrick's Cemetery.
