He was born in Proctor, June 1, 1931, the son of Aaron B. and Lillian (Gould) Congdon.
He was a graduate of Manlius Military Academy in Syracuse, N.Y.
Mr. Congdon served for four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
After his honorable discharge from the military, he worked for the family business, Congdon Lumber Co. in Rutland. He was also manager of Killington Wood Products and retired in 1997 as water treatment manager for the city of Rutland.
He was a member of Rutland Elks Lodge and Shriners Masonic Temple.
Survivors include a son, Kevin Congdon of Chittenden and Sarasota, Fla.; a nephew and two nieces.
He was predeceased by a son, Bernard Congdon Jr., in 2007; a sister, Jean Hazeltine, in 2005; and a brother, Richard Congdon, in 1992.
The graveside service will be held at a later date in Horton Cemetery in Chittenden.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
