Bernice Evelyn Willfong, 94, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, February 20, 2010, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born December 12, 1915, in Vermillion County, Indiana, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Schleuter Willfong. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1933. Following graduation she taught country school in the area for several years. In the early 1950's Bernice went back to school, and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1956. Following graduation from college she began teaching at T.J. Buell Elementary in Flint, Michigan. She taught at Buell Elementary for the rest of her career, retiring from there in 1976. She did further her education while teaching and earned her masters degree in education. She moved to Oskaloosa in 1983. She was a very active member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Oskaloosa, where she taught Sunday school for several years. She was also very passionate about the church's mission projects.

Her family includes her two sisters: Viola Wolvers of Oskaloosa, and Esther Schwin in Missouri; many nieces and nephews; and a very close friend: Mit Williams of Oskaloosa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister: Ruth Willfong; a half brother: Stanley Willfong; a half sister: Beulah Berkshire; two brothers in law: Harley Wolvers and Carl Schwin; a niece: Darlene Smith; and a great nephew: Jimmy Terpstra.

Graveside funeral services and burial will be held Thursday, February 25, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the University Park Cemetery in University Park, Iowa with Reverend Ralph Sprunk officiating. A procession will form at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa by 10:40 a.m. on Thursday for those going to the cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Open visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Memorials may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene Gateway to Hope Building Project.
