Asa Alen came from a long line of cabinetmakers. His great grandfather, Robert Allen, came to America from Ireland, as an indentured cabinetmaker and advanced to a master cabinetmaker. His grandfather, John Rhodum "Rhody" Allen, learned cabinetmaking from his father and taught the trade to his sons. Asa Allen's father was a cabinetmaker, and he taught the trade to Asa Allen and his brothers.

Asa Allen was the son of Theophilus and Elizabeth Allen and the brother of Mahala Allen Askew. He was born on 13 August 1800 in Sumner County, Tennessee and died in 1875 or 1876 in Kinderhook, Pike County, Illinois. He married first Abigail Campbell, daughter of William Campbell, on 18 July 1822 in Ohio County, Kentucky. She was born on 11 November 1800 in Virginia or Kentucky and died in 1851 in Pike County, Illinois. She may have died in childbirth. Both Asa and Abigail were buried in Starkey Cemetery, Salem Twp., Pike County, Illinois.

All of these children, except Andrew Campbell Allen, were born in Ohio County, Kentucky.
