Born in Worthen, Shropshire, Mary was the oldest child of Edgar and Mary Jane (Ford) Jones. She spent her childhood in Montgomery, Montgomeryshire, Wales. She emigrated to Canada on May 1, 1912 on the RMS Tunisian, arriving at the port of Quebec. Family lore has it that she was originally booked on the RMS Titanic in April 1912, but that her mother warned her against going. She settled in Montreal and married Arthur Batten three days after arriving in Canada. She entered the United States through Alburgh, Vermont on May 2, 1914 to meet her husband in Waterville, Connecticut. They lived at 677 Huntingdon Avenue.
At the time of her death, she was survived by her husband, and three of her four children: Frederick Batten, Norah Batten Schreier, and Florence Batten Palmer. Her son Arthur died four months before she did.
