John Bonson Dead!
Prominent Banker and Citizen Succumbs After a Long Illness.
Funeral Held Sunday- Largely Attended by Ravenna Citizens and Business
Associates and Friends from Neighboring Towns.
John R. Bonson, cashier of the Citizens State Bank of Ravenna died at his home in this city,
Thursday evening, October 16 th , 1913, and was laid to rest in the Ravenna cemetery on the
Sunday following.
Mr. Bonsen had been ill during the greater part of last summer, suffering with a serious
bowel and stomach disorder. In the early part of the summer he went to Excelsior Springs,
Mo., in search of relief, later going to Hot Springs, Dakota, where he submitted to
operation for appendecitis. Following this operation he appeared to improve and was
brought home in a convalescent condition. His improvement was but temperary, however,
his real ailment being of such character that his complete recovery was impossible. It was
planned to return with him to Hot Springs last week, but he was taken suddenly worse last
Wednesday evening and passed away Thursday evening at about eight o´clock.
Mr Bonson would have been fourty years of age on November 24 th next. He was born in
Hall county and spent his early life in Grand Island and Wood River. After completing his
education, he was engaged in the stock business for a number of years with his father,
Nichols Bonson, until about eight years ago when he engaged in the banking business at
Arnold, this state. He was very successful in this line of business, and in 1907 moved to
Pleasanton, where he, with associates, established the Farmers State Bank and soon after
acquired the control of the State Bank of Poole. About two years ago Mr. Bonson and his
associates bought the Citizens State Bank of Ravenna and he came here to personally take
charge of the business as cashier and his since figured largely in the business, scocial and
fraternal affairs of this community. He was a man of most corteous daring strict
business methods, exemplary in personal habits, and a cheerful and companionable
temperament, and during his comparatively brief carrer in Ravenna, made many friends in
the city and surrounding territory.
Mr. Bonson was married January 20 th , 1898 to Miss Lurline Brown, and to this union one son, Gordon Bonson, was born. Mrs. Bonson and son survive to mourn the untimely death
of a kind and considerate husband and father.
The funeral was held at the late residence of the deceased in Ravenna on Sunday, and was
largely attended by the townspeople, friends and neighbors of the family, relatives from
nearby points and not less than a dozen business associates and well-known bankers and
representatives from banks in Kearney, Grand Island, Wood River, Amherst, Poole and
Pleasanton.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Nusbaum, a German Lutheran minister from
Grand Island, assisted by Rev. Patterson and Rev. Basker, of Ravenna.
Mr. Bonson was a valued member of the Knights of Pythias, A.O.U.W. Modern
Brotherhood and modern Woodmen, and large delegations from each of these orders
attended the funeral, and marched to the cemetery, at the head of the funeral procession.
At the grave the impressive burial service of the Knights of Pythias was enacted.
There is a deep feeling of sympathy for the bereaved wife and son among Ravenna people
who have done everything that could be done to assure them that they are not alone in
their grief.
