Doggett-Nelson

At the beautiful residence of Mrs. P. M. Doggett [Mrs. Philip Martin Doggett, Martha Tevis Martin] of this city on Thursday at five o'clock, June 17, 1920, occurred the pretty home wedding of her youngest daughter, Miss Thelma Laura [sic] Doggett, to Mr. Howard Easter Nelson.

The house was beautifully decorated with flowers everywhere. At the appointed time the bridal party entered the living room from a north door of an adjoining room, the bride and groom taking their place under a floral arch of roses, the bridesmaid, Miss Delores Sappington of Arcadia, and best man, Mr. Otto Boyer of Liberal, taking their places on either side of the bride and groom. After a brief prayer by Rev. M. Bell, the clergyman proceded with the beautiful Methodist Episcopal Ritual service. Both bride and groom plighted their troth and took upon themselves the vows that united their lives in one. The groom took the wedding ring from a rose bud and placed it upon the finger of the bride at the close of the ceremony.

The bride was attired in a beautiful costume of pale blue silk crepe de chine with gold lace trimming, a bridal veil draped with white bride's roses and carried a boquet of roses. The bridesmaid, a clear brunette in pleasing contrast, wore a gown of pink silk crepe de chine and carried pink roses.

The groom and best man were handsome and manly in the conventional serves for afternoon weddings.

After congratulations the bridal party led the way to the dining room where a beautifully decorated table stood, roses and bride's cake were in evidence. A dainty two course luncheon consisting of pressed chicken sandwiches, potato salad, pickles and assorted cakes, bride's cake and brick ice cream were served. The color scheme of pink and white was carried out in the luncheon.

Mrs. Nelson is a most charming young lade, possessing spiritual, mental and physical beauty and grace. She moved to Liberal two years ago with her mother and was a student in our high school.

Mr. Nelson is a splendid your man worthy of his lovely bride. His is a student at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kans. He is a returned soldier, having served eleven months overseas. He engaged in two prominent battles with the 89th division.

Mr. and Mrs. Nelson will continue their studies at Winfield, Kansas, College.

The newlyweds left Liberal for Council Grove, Friday morning at 11:55, where they will visit Mrs. Nelson's brother, Walter M. Doggett, and family, after which they will go to Kismet, Kansas, to visit Mr. Nelson's parents, from there to their home in Winfield, where they will be at home to their friends after August 1st.

Some of the touching events of the wedding were: The marriage ceremony was performed by the bride's brother, the Rev. Clifford T. Doggett; the groom and best man saw overseas service in the world war and guests were those most in touch with the sweet young bride's love and life.

The quests were: Mrs. P. M. Doggett, mother of the bride; Rev. Clifford T. Doggett, a brother; Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Wilson and little daughter, Wilberta, sister, brother-in-law and neice; Mrs. Sappington and daughter, Miss Delores of Arcadia; Misses Elsie Sackett, Lillie Mathes and Hortense Chester of Liberal; Misses Hazeland Maude Hoffman of New Ulysses, childhood schoolmates of the bride; Rev. and Mrs. M. Bell, Otto Boyer and Howard Sackett of Liberal.
