Mrs. William (Sadie) Seigars of Alna kept a daily diary of events in her life and happenings in the town. In an entry dated Saturday, March 21, 1903, she relates the sad story behind the young girl's death.
"Sadie Bailey got burned very bad yesterday. They burned a brush pile near the house and after it had burned down she was playing around it and in some way got her clothes afire. She run around the ice house and around the house before they saw her then Mr. Minnehan [her stepfather] went to the barn and got a horse blanket and wrapped around her to smother the fire. Her clothes were nearly all burned off her."
Thursday March 26, 1903..."Sadie Bailey died this morn between seven and eight.The poor little girl has been a great sufferer but is now at rest."
Sunday, March 29, 1903..."Sadie Bailey was buried this afternoon. Quite a number attended the funeral."
