Ardmore, OK — Funeral services for Ronald Dennis Staggs, 76, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, in the First Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Alton Fannin. Graveside rites and burial will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Hennessey Cemetery, Hennessey, Okla.


Ron was born to the late Olan Bryan and Elsa Lorraine (McCurry) Staggs on Dec. 28, 1933, at Enid, Okla. He died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at his Ardmore residence.


A graduate of Hennesey High School, the Class of 1951, Ron worked for a time in the oil fields before going to college. He received a Bachelor's degree in Geology from Oklahoma State University in 1959, and taught Math in the Junior High School at Odessa, Texas. In 1961 he received a Bachelor's degree in Math from Central State University at Edmond. He began working with the Social Security Administration in 1961 at Amarillo, Texas, and from 1967 to 1969 was the Field Representative on the Navajo Reservation, Farmington, N.M.


He moved to Ardmore in 1975 from San Angelo, Texas, and became the District Manager of the Social Security office here. He retired in 1999.


He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Ardmore. He was a member of the Ardmore Kiwanis Club for 35 years and had served as President from 1993 to 1994 and was Kiwanian of the Year in 1978. Ron became a Mason in 1957, received the 32nd Degree and became affiliated with the Ardmore Lodge #31 AF & AM in 1979. He received his 50 Year Pin in 2007.


Survivors include his wife, Glenna Staggs of the home; three children, Joseph Staggs and his wife, Perla and their daughter, Haley, Susan Staggs and her daughter, Madelinn, Sydney Painter and her husband, Kirk, and their children, Benton, Audra and Kathryn; stepchildren, Donna Crosslin and Charlie Jareau; also the mother of his children, LaVonn Walton Staggs Richard; brother, David Staggs and wife, Marilyn; and nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents; and nephew, John David Staggs.


Serving as bearers will be Boyd Howell, Clayton Fields, Don Thompson, Kirk Painter, Benton Painter and Harrell Kennedy. Honorary bearers include members of his Sunday School Class, the Ardmore Kiwanis Club and brother Masons.


The family will receive friends at the Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home this evening from 6-7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Cross Timbers Hospice.
