Mrs. Malinda Greyer, one of the well known residents of Atlanta, died Tuesday at
the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Dunn. Her death was due to paralysis, she
having suffered two strokes during the last few weeks.
One stroke came last February. She partly recovered from the effects of this and
was able to be up and around the house when the second stroke came later. Her
condition gradually became worse and on Decoration Day she suffered a chill and
from that time until the end her decline was rapid.
Funeral services will be held at the Atlanta M.E. church Thursday afternoon at 2
o'clock and will be conducted by Rev. A.K. Love and Rev. J.C. Reynolds. Mrs.
Greyer was most familiarly known to all her friends as "Mammy Greyer", because
of her unveiling happy disposition, and made friends of everyone. She would have
been 68 years of age, July 12th, she having been born near Ekin, July 12th,
1857. She was the daughter of George and Matilda Hershman, pioneer citizens of
that community. September 17, 1873, she was united in marriage to John Greyer,
the marriage taking place in Ekin. In 1882 following their marriage the family
moved to Atlanta and it has since been her home. The husband died March 31,
1921.
Five children were born to their union, four of whom survive the mother: Mrs.
Fred Dunn at whose home she died, Mrs. I.H. Paul, and Mrs. George Frank, of
Atlanta, and Mrs. Iona Orr, of Indianapolis. A daughter, Mrs. Emma Dietrich, of
Atlanta, is deceased.
She is also survived by twelve grand-children and three great grandchildren. A
granddaughter, Miss Frances Dietrich is a teacher in the Detroit, Mich. schools.
A grandson, Herbert Bradfield, graduated Monday with honors from Michigan
University at Ann Arbor and another grandson, Robert Dietrich Miller is a
student at Ann Arbor. John C. Dunn another grandson, resides in Cleveland, Ohio.
Mrs. Aloon Dunn Leach, of Atlanta, is a granddaughter and her three children are
the great grandchildren of Mrs. Greyer. Mrs. Irvin Orr, of Indianapolis, is a
granddaughter. Mrs. Greyer is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Nancy Jane
Miller, of Sheridan, and four brothers, Will H. Hershman, of Tipton, Samuel and
Elwood Hershman, of Ekin and John Hershman of Orange county.
In Atlanta's palmy days when the tin plate mill was booming, "Mammy" Greyer
conducted the leading boarding house in Atlanta, and she was known far and near
among the tin plate workers for her perfection in cooking and her kindly and
straightforward dealings with the men. The men not only came to her for her good
eats, but she was their confidante and she gave them of her motherly counsel as
many of them were young men and away from home influences. She was indeed a
mother to many of them and they loved and respected her. All her business
dealing were conducted in a straightforward way, winning the esteem and respect
of everyone.
Early in her girlhood she united with the M.E. church upon her confession of
faith and about 28 years ago transferred her memebership to the Atlanta church
and lived a devoted Christian life, her influence counting for good in the
community and among her neighbors and friends.
