Richard Coffey was son of Osborn Coffey, a Revolutionary soldier who served at Saratoga and Yorktown. Richard married Catherine McCormack and they moved to Danville, Ky. where Richard studied medicine under Dr. Ephraim McDowell, for whom he named his second son. In 1812 he served in Colonel Shelby's Kentucky Regiment. The family moved to Camden Point, Mo. and Richard was invited to preach in April 1856. Although he practiced medicine he preferred the life of a Baptist Missionary. Children of Richard & Catherine were Wm A, died in Civil War, Ephraim M, Letitia S, & Mary J.
