United States Army Officer. Son of Colonel John R. Jones, 58th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and Anna E. Clay Jones. Grandson of US Congressman Joseph Clay.

He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1867, and served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th United States Artillery until his resignation in 1870.

He died as a result of an accident near Linwood, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. His funeral was held at the home of brother-in-law, Emile Geyelin.
