ABELLON MARIA LUISA "MAYA" ABELLON Maria Luisa Abellon, known as Maya to family and friends, died Thursday, February 18th, 2010 at Chateau de Notre Dame in New Orleans where she resided during a long illness. She was 91. A retired translator, editor, and avid world traveler, Maya was born in Holguin, Cuba on May 31, 1918, the daughter of Luis Antonio Abellon and Antonia Maria Sainz. She attended Our Lady of The Pines College in Ashville, NC and was a graduate of The George Washington University in Washington, DC where she remained a long time resident--working at The Organization of American States (The Pan American Union) and later at The International Monetary Fun--until her retirement in 1983 when she moved to New Orleans to join her family. During the 1960s Maya worked tirelessly and unselfishly to bring a great many of her relatives to the United States following the Communist takeover of her native Cuba. Those she helped will never forget her sacrifices. She was the sister of the late Antonio Abellon of Miami, FL and the late Esther M. Abellon of New Orleans, LA. Her sister Georgia Abellon Rodriguez of New Orleans, LA, survives her. Six nephews and two nieces as well as a large extended family of grand- and great-grand nieces and nephews also survive her. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. (in Metairie Cemetery), on Tuesday, Feb 23rd, 2010 at 11am. A private Burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
