From his daughter's biography (Marjorie):

Roy had no enemies and had an 80-car funeral procession, the largest number anyone could recall for that time.

He was a staunch Republican, who loved to talk politics. He was very much a non-conformist.

He was the director of the one-room rural school called Whitneyville, which sat on an acre of land which laid on one corner of a crossroads down the hill from the farmhouse where the family lived. At one time, he had it painted red, which was not well accepted and the county superintendent of schools requested it be returned to white, which it was.

Roy had great mechanical abilities, craftsmanship, an ear for music. He played the Jew's Harp and the harmonica. He was a nice looking man with brown hair and blue eyes. He liked beer, but never at the family home. He was an even tempered and kindly man.
