He was the son of Asa Carpenter and Susannah Wasgate Young. He enlisted in the Second Regiment of the Maine Volunteers on August 5, 1862,He was later transferred to the 20th Maine Regiment.He moved to Missouri in September, 1865 and married Frances Eleanor Cuba Ewing November 13, 1867.He was the father of five children
