Civil War Union Major General. Brilliant Military Engineer. Served as Chief Topographical Engineer of the Army of the Potomac, then as a division and Corps commander. Succeeded Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock as commander of the II Corps, which he lead from November 1864 to Lee's Surrender at Appomattox in April 1865.
