Cowherd, Stanley Walker, 81, of Cullasaja Club Drive, Highlands, NC, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2002 in a local hospital. He was a native of Kansas City, MO, a son of the late Fletcher Cowherd Jr and Maude Chatten Cowherd. He was a US Army and US Airforce Veteran of World War II. He was one of the founding partners of Miller, Cowherd and Kerver Real Estate of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and the youngest President of the Home Builders Association in Kansas City. He had lived in Highlands since 1991, he was a member of the Cullasaja Club and a member of Highlands First Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of twenty years, Peggy Jean Groover Cowherd; one daughter, Cathy Ritti and husband Frank of Orlando, FL; one son, Stanley Cowherd Jr. and wife Gina of Coral Springs, FL; two step-daughters, Lynette Kay and Robin Roccaro both of Burbank, CA; one step-son, Bill Owen and wife, Jerri of Temecula, CA; one brother, Chatten Cowherd of Ft. Worth, TX; twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gladys Johnsen Cowherd and a brother, Fletcher Cowherd. Funeral Services will be held Monday, April 15, 2002 at 10:30 AM at Mt. Washington Funeral Home in Independence, MO. Memorials may be made to Dr. John Baumrucker's Bolivia Mission Fund, PO Box 1959, Highlands, NC 28741, or to Highlands-Cashiers Hospital, PO Drawer 190, Highlands, NC 28741. Burial will be at Mt. Washington Cemetery in Independence, MO. Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
