Born in North Carolina in 1811, migrated to Illinois for a few years and then to Newton (1845) and Lawrence (1860) Counties in Missouri. He served in the 11th Missouri Infantry, Company A, CSA in the Civil War. After the war his property was confiscated and, in 1863, he packed up his family and headed to Texas. His wife, Lorania, died before the move and he married Iantha, a widow, when he arrived in Texas. Two of his sons remained behind in Missouri while the rest moved with him to Texas. He owned property in Llano County near the confluence of the Waters Creek and the Llano River. His son Gilford by his second wife, Iantha, survived him and owned several properties in Llano County.
