Crookston, Minn. —

Eleanor Marie Cournia, 90, of Crookston, Minnesota, died peacefully Saturday afternoon, February 20, 2010, at the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home in Crookston. Eleanor was born in Crookston on November 16, 1919, and was the daughter of Philip and Mabel (Doucet) Fontaine. She grew up in Crookston, was baptized and confirmed at St. Anne's Catholic Church, and attended St. Joseph's Academy, graduating in 1938. Later, while working at the Barrel Restaurant in Crookston, Eleanor met the love of her life, LeRoy Cournia. Eleanor and Roy were married at St. Anne's Catholic Church on May 1, 1940. Eleanor laughingly recalled that two of their most prized wedding gifts were a cow and a hog. The couple made their home on a farm south of Crookston, where they raised their family and Eleanor led the busy life of a homemaker. She was a talented pianist and played at many special community events and other special occasions, and often accompanied area vocal groups. She was also a very accomplished seamstress and interior decorator. Sadly, Roy passed away on November 7, 1956. Soon after, Eleanor began working at the Elks Club in Crookston. On November 11, 1961 she married Lee Wahouske. Eleanor was later employed at Fert-L-Flow in Crookston, and then as a teacher's aide at the Cathedral High School. Prior to her retirement she managed the Linen Closet at Barlow Furniture and did a weekly decorating tips segment for the store on KROX. Eleanor was a devoted member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception parish, and in earlier years sang in the church choir and served as a soloist. She taught catechism at the Cathedral and was a former member of the Catholic Daughters. Eleanor's life was a blessing to her family and she will be missed beyond measure.

Loving family members include her six children and their spouses, Janet and Brad Dybevick of Hemet, CA, Ronald and Jean Cournia of Stafford, VA, Dianne and Ray Riendeau of Portland, IN, Michael and Barbara Cournia of Aloha, OR, John and Jody Cournia of Fertile, MN, and Bill and Marilyn Wahouske of Crookston, MN; seventeen grandchildren, Michael Wilson, Matthew Wilson, Michelle Shields, Chris Dybevick, Jason Cournia, Nicole Toto, Renee Hullinger, RaeAnne Rains, Monique McQueary, Jennifer Cournia, Christina Cournia, Monica Hill, Rachel Cournia, Lauren Wahouske, Cole Wahouske, Caitlin Wahouske, and Kendall Wahouske; fourteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Besides her husband, LeRoy "Roy" Cournia, Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Carolyn Wilson, who died in 1994; a two-year old sister, Therese; and a brother, James Fontaine. May God bless Eleanor's memory.

Eleanor's funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30am, Saturday, February 27, 2010, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston with The Very Rev. Bob Schreiner, presiding. Visitation will be at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home on Friday from 5-7:00pm, with a 7:00pm prayer service, and at the church for one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Crookston.
