Charles Buford Johnson Jr. was born in Macon County, Ga. His parents were Charles and Florence Johnson Sr. Johnson spent his childhood in Oglethorpe and his first job was on the family farm. Johnson graduated from Oglethorpe High School and then went to North Georgia College. At North Georgia College, Johnson was involved in student organizations such the varsity basketball team, Rex fraternity, an intramural football team, officer's club, YMCA and Letterman's Club. In the Corps of Cadets he became a captain and the 1st Battalion Commander. Many of Johnson's classmates remember him fondly as 'Foggy', because he always seemed to be in a fog. In 1957, Johnson graduated from North Georgia College with a BA in History and continued to pursue his military career. It was some time after graduation before Johnson met his wife, Constance. The two met in Puerto Rico and they had a daughter named Caroline Bernadette. Soon after, Johnson headed to Vietnam. Johnson was one of the first Americans to go to Vietnam. He was a military adviser in the MAAG, Military Assistance Advisory Group. He was there to advise the Vietnamese. On June 14, 1963 Johnson was traveling with an Army of Vietnam unit when the unit was ambushed. He was the third Georgian killed in the war.
