Ralph's parents were Enis Clarence and Zada Birdsong Brink. Initially he was a member of the New Mexico National Guard, joining on 25 October 1940. His national guard unit was activated 6 January 1941 as part of the 515th Coastal Artillery Regiment. Fought the Japanese in the Philippines and was captured in February 1942. Suffered sixteen months in the Hoten POW Camp in Manchuria before he died from gangrene in his crushed right leg.
