Jonas was the son of Recie Brindle and her husband James Earl Powers. His siblings were Ella Nance Griffin, James Harvey, Bertha Williamson Milligan, Charles Artie, Robert Earl, William Edward, Catherine Lucille Brown, Mary Elizabeth and John Marvin Powers.

He was the husband of Ada Beatrice Pressley. This union was blessed with Joyce Ann Nash, Cecil and Sharon Mowrer. The marriage ended in divorce.

During World War Two he served as AAM2 in the U S Navy.
